In stamping, every operation boils down to one of two categories: separating and forming. Separating operations—blanking, piercing, trimming, and slitting—shear the sheet metal along a closed or open contour until fracture occurs. The key variables are punch-die clearance, shear strength of the material, and the sharpness of the cutting edges. For a typical mild steel blanking job, clearance is set around 5–8% of sheet thickness per side; go too tight and you get secondary shear and die wear, go too loose and you get heavy burrs and a poor edge. Forming operations—bending, drawing, flanging, and coining—rely on plastic deformation beyond yield but below ultimate tensile strength. In deep drawing, for example, the draw ratio (blank diameter divided by punch diameter) usually stays under 2.0 for a single pass in low-carbon steel, otherwise you risk wrinkling or tearing and need a redraw.
From a mold design and quoting standpoint, these fundamentals directly affect cost. A blanking die with tight clearance needs higher-precision grinding and better guide pillars, which adds maybe 15–20% to the tooling price. A drawing die requires a blank holder with controlled pressure, sometimes a double-action press, and careful radius selection on the die shoulder—typically 6–10 times sheet thickness for the first draw. When I quote a stamping job, I always ask for the material grade, thickness, and whether the part needs a separated edge or a formed feature, because that determines whether we're looking at a simple compound die or a progressive die with multiple stations.
